Asheville
Blue Ridge Mountains, breweries, and the Biltmore Estate.
About Asheville
Asheville sits in a bowl of Blue Ridge Mountains with the Blue Ridge Parkway running right past town, and it has built an identity all its own: a craft-beer capital with dozens of breweries, a working artists' colony in the River Arts District, and the Biltmore Estate β the largest private home in America β on its southern edge. Hotel rates track the leaf calendar more than anything else: October weekends, when the surrounding mountains peak, are the most expensive nights of the year and sell out far ahead. That's when rates that aren't displayed on the open web matter most β a meaningful difference some nights, more modest others.
The town itself rewards wandering. Downtown's Art Deco architecture survived the Depression intact, the independent bookstores and music rooms give the evenings shape, and the South Slope brewery district lets you walk a tasting tour without ever moving the car. West Asheville, across the French Broad River, runs more casual and local along Haywood Road, while Biltmore Village's planned 1890s streets sit at the estate's gates. Give Biltmore a full day β the house, Frederick Law Olmsted's grounds, and the winery are more than an afternoon.
Our Travel Editor's Asheville advice: if fall color is the mission, aim for mid-to-late October but book by midsummer β the gap between an October Saturday and a November one is among the steepest seasonal swings in the South. Buy Biltmore tickets in advance (they're timed-entry and cheaper ahead), and drive at least one stretch of the Parkway south toward Mount Pisgah, where the long-range overlooks are the postcard.
