Napa Valley
Wine country flagship — vineyards, valley views, and serious food.
About Napa Valley
Napa Valley is American wine country's flagship, and it prices like one. A 30-mile valley with a hard cap on new development, hundreds of wineries, and a restaurant scene anchored by Yountville's Michelin row means hotel rates here run higher than almost any rural market in the country — especially Friday and Saturday nights during the September–October harvest crush. That's exactly the kind of market where rates not displayed on the open web earn their keep: a meaningful difference some nights, more modest others, but on a two-night wine-country weekend even one discounted night moves the budget.
The valley reads south to north: the city of Napa has the most room inventory, the Oxbow Public Market, and a walkable downtown that's improved dramatically over the past decade. Yountville is the splurge — a village you can walk end to end, packed with some of the best restaurants in America. St. Helena is the classic main-street wine town in the heart of the vineyards, and Calistoga, at the top of the valley, trades on hot springs, mud baths, and a more laid-back, old-resort feel. Two roads run the valley's length: Highway 29 is the busy main drag, the Silverado Trail the quieter parallel.
Our Travel Editor's Napa advice: go midweek if you possibly can — Sunday through Thursday rates can run dramatically below the same room on Saturday, and the tasting rooms are calmer too. Book winery visits ahead; most of the valley is appointment-based now, and the best small producers fill their calendars. And build your day around two tastings, not five, with a long lunch in the middle — that's the trip people come back for.
