Madrid
Grand boulevards, world-class art, and dinners that start at 10pm.
About Madrid
Madrid is the capital that rewards travelers who lean into its rhythm. This is a late city — lunch runs long, the evening paseo fills the plazas at dusk, and dinner rarely starts before 9 or 10. Once you sync to it, the city opens up: the Prado, Reina Sofía, and Thyssen-Bornemisza form one of the densest art triangles on earth, the Retiro park is a green lung in the center, and the tapas crawl through La Latina is a proper institution.
Unlike the coastal Spanish cities, Madrid is landlocked, high, and dry — which means hot summers, crisp winters, and gloriously clear light most of the year. It's also more affordable than travelers expect for a European capital, and member pricing widens the gap further, with a set of rates the big public booking sites don't display. The best hotels cluster around the Gran Vía, the Salamanca district, and the streets radiating off Puerta del Sol.
Our Travel Editor's Madrid advice: don't overschedule. Pick one major museum per day, eat late, and leave whole afternoons open for wandering. Spring and fall deliver the best weather; August empties out as locals flee the heat, which can mean quieter streets and softer rates.
