About Boise / Nampa

Boise is the rare state capital where you can float a river through the middle of downtown. The Boise River Greenbelt β€” 25 miles of riverside path β€” threads the whole city together, the foothills trail network starts within walking distance of the Capitol, and the downtown itself has quietly become one of the better small-city food scenes in the West, anchored by the Basque Block and a legitimate brewery circuit. Hotel rates here are reasonable by big-city standards to begin with, and member rates that aren't displayed on the open web tighten the math further β€” a meaningful difference some nights, more modest others, but worth the check on football Saturdays and event weekends when downtown fills up.

The region works as a unit. Garden City, directly across the river, has turned a stretch of old warehouses along Chinden into wineries, taprooms, and studios. Meridian sits between Boise and Nampa with newer suburban hotel stock that often undercuts downtown. Nampa itself anchors the western valley with the Ford Idaho Center's concert-and-rodeo calendar and puts you closest to the Sunnyslope wine district along the Snake River β€” Idaho's main wine country, which still flies under most travelers' radar.

Our Travel Editor's Boise advice: stay downtown if it's your first visit β€” the walkability between the Basque Block, Freak Alley's murals, and the Greenbelt is the whole point. Come late May through June or in September: summer afternoons regularly top 95 degrees in July and August, while shoulder-season evenings on a patio are what Boise does best. And if there's a Boise State home game, either book early or price Meridian and Nampa instead.
