Shana's Top Picks for Tropical Destinations

Shana is a world traveler with a running list of the places she would go back to and the ones she is still chasing. These are her tropical picks: the overwater villa everyone pictures, and two waterfront addresses in the Maldives that most travelers never think to look at.

Overwater bungalows on the Bora Bora lagoon with Mount Otemanu rising behind them
St. Regis Bora Bora villa interior with a thatched roof, canopy bed, and lagoon view
Pick 01

The St. Regis Bora Bora Resort

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

The overwater villa postcard, on the lagoon side of Mount Otemanu.

If there is one image the words 'tropical honeymoon' summon, it is this: thatched overwater villas on impossibly clear turquoise water, with a green volcanic peak rising behind them. The St. Regis sits on its own motu on the Bora Bora lagoon, looking directly across at Mount Otemanu, which is the view most people are actually picturing.

The villas are among the largest in French Polynesia, with private decks, direct lagoon access, and glass floor panels in many categories. There is a lagoonarium for snorkeling, a spa built on its own island, and butler service that French Polynesia does better than almost anywhere.

The honest part: Bora Bora is a long way from almost everywhere, and getting there means a flight to Tahiti and then a connecting island flight, so it works best as a longer trip rather than a quick escape. It is also the most expensive tropical destination in this set by a wide margin. If the overwater villa is the whole point of the trip, this is the version worth doing properly.

Guest room at Barceló Nasandhura Malé with a teal runner and botanical feature wall
Pick 02

Barceló Nasandhura Malé

Malé, Maldives

A modern harbor-view hotel in the Maldivian capital, minutes from the airport ferry.

This is the Maldives most people never consider, and it solves a real problem. Barceló Nasandhura sits in Malé itself, on the waterfront, with balconies looking out over the harbor and the atoll beyond. Rooms are contemporary and bright, and the location puts you a short hop from the airport rather than an expensive seaplane transfer away.

It works two ways. As a first or last night, it removes the single most stressful part of a Maldives trip: the tight connection between a long-haul flight and a scheduled seaplane that only flies in daylight. As a base in its own right, it makes the Maldives reachable for travelers who want the water and the region without a private-island budget.

The honest part: this is a city hotel, not an island resort. There are no overwater villas and no private beach at your door. If the overwater villa is the entire reason for the trip, book a resort island instead and use a property like this for the connecting night.

Rooftop terrace at Summer Beach Maldives at dusk overlooking Malé's beach and harbor
Pick 03

Summer Beach Maldives

Malé, North Malé Atoll

Rooftop sunsets over the artificial beach, in the middle of the capital.

Summer Beach sits on Boduthakurufaanu Magu, the road that rings Malé, directly across from the city's artificial beach. The rooftop terrace is the reason to know about it: it looks west over the water, the seawall, and the harbor lights, and it turns in a sunset that competes with a lot of far more expensive addresses.

For travelers doing the Maldives on a real budget, or anyone who wants a night in the capital before transferring out to an atoll, it is one of the more comfortable ways to do it. You are walking distance from the beach, the fish market, and the ferry terminal.

The honest part: same caveat as any Malé property. This is a city stay, the beach across the road is man made, and Malé is one of the most densely populated cities on earth, so it is busy rather than serene. Come for convenience, value, and that rooftop, not for isolation.
