Carmel-by-the-Sea
A storybook California coast village.
About Carmel-by-the-Sea
Carmel-by-the-Sea is one square mile of storybook cottages, art galleries, and pine-shaded lanes ending at a white-sand beach β a village so committed to its character that homes have names instead of street numbers and the commercial district has no parking meters or streetlights to speak of. The hotel stock matches the town: small inns and boutique properties rather than big-box towers, which means inventory is permanently tight and weekend rates run high year-round. It's a market where rates that aren't displayed on the open web are always worth a check β a meaningful difference some nights, more modest others, but small inns rarely discount publicly.
The setting does the heavy lifting. Carmel Beach, at the foot of Ocean Avenue, is one of California's prettiest town beaches and famously dog-friendly, with off-leash sand and a cypress-framed crescent of surf. Scenic Road traces the bluff past Frank Lloyd Wright's only oceanfront house toward Carmel Point, the Carmel Mission β one of California's most beautiful β sits just inland, and Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, a few minutes south, may be the single best coastal walk in the state. Pebble Beach and the 17-Mile Drive border the village to the north.
Our Travel Editor's Carmel advice: know the fog calendar β June and July mornings are often gray on this coast, while September and October are the warmest, clearest months of the year. Book a room with a fireplace (a Carmel inn signature) and walk everywhere; the village rewards aimless wandering down its courtyard passageways more than any itinerary. And reserve Point Lobos for the morning, when the light is best and the parking lots haven't filled.
