About San Diego

San Diego's weather is so reliably perfect that the hotel market never really has an off season — but it does have soft spots, and finding them is the game. Summer is peak everything, Comic-Con week in July warps downtown pricing beyond recognition, and the shoulder months of spring and fall deliver the same 72-degree afternoons at noticeably gentler rates. Member pricing adds another layer: a set of rates the big public booking sites don't display, with a meaningful difference some nights and a more modest one on others. In a market that rarely goes on sale publicly, that second look is worth the thirty seconds.

The coastline is the org chart here. Coronado, across the bay, is the postcard — wide white sand and one of the most famous wooden beach resorts in the world. La Jolla stacks cliffside elegance, sea lions, and cove snorkeling into the city's most upscale beach neighborhood. Mission Beach and Pacific Beach run the boardwalk-and-bonfire end of the spectrum. And the Gaslamp Quarter downtown trades sand for Victorian-era blocks of restaurants and rooftop bars, with Petco Park and the bay a short walk away.

Our Travel Editor's San Diego advice: know about May Gray and June Gloom — late spring mornings along the coast are often overcast until midday, which is exactly why those weeks are cheaper. September and early October are the insider's play: the ocean is at its warmest, the crowds are gone, and the rates have exhaled. Whatever you do, don't book downtown during Comic-Con by accident.

Who's it for?

Sunset cliffs walks, La Jolla cove mornings, and dinner in Little Italy — San Diego is a low-effort, high-reward couples trip. The classic move is a Coronado or La Jolla stay with one splurge dinner downtown.

Top Neighborhoods

Gaslamp Quarter

Downtown's 16-block Victorian-era entertainment district — restaurants, rooftop bars, and Petco Park, with the bay and convention center steps away.

La Jolla

The jewel of the coast: cliffside hotels above the cove, sea lions on the rocks, tide pools, and the village's gallery-and-bistro scene.

Coronado

Across the bay bridge, a flat, bikeable island village with one of the widest, whitest beaches on the West Coast and a landmark resort anchoring it.

Mission Beach / Pacific Beach

The boardwalk strip — beach cottages, bonfire rings, a vintage roller coaster, and the bars of PB. The young, sandy, flip-flops end of San Diego.
