South Beach Miami
Art Deco, beach scene, and warm-water winters.
About South Beach Miami
South Beach is one of the few American beach destinations where the hotel itself is half the trip. The Art Deco district along Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue is a living museum of 1930s pastel architecture, and dozens of those landmark buildings are still operating hotels. Rates here move with the winter calendar more than almost anywhere else in the country β a room that's reasonable in September can triple over Art Basel week in December or spring break in March. That volatility is exactly where a different set of prices, the kind not displayed on the open web, can change the math on a trip.
The geography is simple: South of Fifth is the quiet, food-driven tip of the island; the central blocks around Ocean Drive are the scene; Mid-Beach up Collins is where the big resort pools and the famous renovated grande-dame properties live. The water is genuinely warm and swimmable from roughly November through April, which is the whole point β this is America's most reliable warm-winter beach city that still feels like a city.
Our Travel Editor's South Beach advice: decide honestly whether you want the scene or the beach, because they're priced differently. A quieter Mid-Beach or South of Fifth property at a member rate often costs less than a louder Ocean Drive room at the public price β and you can always walk to the noise when you want it, then leave it behind at midnight.
