Sailing from Fort Lauderdale

Port Everglades processes over four million passengers per year and is the home port for most Caribbean and transatlantic cruises. Fort Lauderdale Beach is ten minutes from the terminal, with a long stretch of mid-range and luxury hotels, walkable A1A restaurants, and a nightlife strip that doesn't require you to be in South Beach to have a good time. For travelers flying into South Florida, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport is often the closer and cheaper arrival point.

Travel Editor: Fort Lauderdale's beach hotels are a better pre-cruise base than Miami for most itineraries — quieter, cheaper, and closer to the terminal.

Where to Stay Before Your Fort Lauderdale Cruise

Fort Lauderdale Beach is the classic pre-cruise pick: a long row of hotels along A1A about ten minutes from the Port Everglades terminals, with walkable restaurants and an evening beach stroll built in. The 17th Street Causeway corridor sits even closer — several hotels there are practically at the port's doorstep, five minutes or less from most terminals. And because Port Everglades borders Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, even the airport-area hotels are only about a five-to-ten-minute drive from the ship, which makes this one of the easiest fly-in ports in the country.

A number of hotels along the 17th Street corridor offer cruise shuttles — some complimentary, more of them paid per person — so check the fine print when you compare rates. With the distances this short, rideshare is the simple default: roughly $10 to $20 from the beach or airport zone to your terminal. If you're driving down, Port Everglades has official garages billed per day, and park-and-cruise hotel packages around the 17th Street and airport areas often bundle a night plus parking for less than the garage alone on a week-long sailing.

Even with the airport this close, the night-before rule still applies — a delayed inbound flight is the one variable you can't fix on sailing morning, and South Florida afternoon thunderstorms delay plenty of them. The reward for arriving early is a low-stress embarkation day: from a beach or 17th Street hotel you can sleep in, have a real breakfast, and still be at the terminal by late morning. Leaving the hotel between 10:30 and 11:30 a.m. usually threads the gap between the early rush and the afternoon cutoff comfortably.
