Sailing from Galveston

Galveston is the primary cruise port for Texas and the entire Gulf Coast — the only major North American port where you can board a Caribbean cruise by driving from home. Carnival and Royal Caribbean both homeport here. Galveston Island's historic Strand District, its Victorian architecture, beach strand, and surprisingly good seafood restaurants make it worth arriving a night early just for the town itself.

Travel Editor: Houston-area travelers: budget an extra hour for I-45 to the island and stay overnight in Galveston — it's far easier than a 5am departure-morning drive.

Where to Stay Before Your Galveston Cruise

Stay on the island. The historic Strand District puts you five minutes or less from the cruise terminals, surrounded by Victorian storefronts, restaurants, and the kind of walkable evening that makes the pre-cruise night feel like vacation already. The Seawall Boulevard hotel strip along the beach runs about 10 to 15 minutes from the port and gives you a Gulf-view room for the night before. Hotels back on the mainland in Texas City or League City save a little money but put you back on I-45 on sailing morning — the exact road you stayed over to avoid.

Several Galveston hotels run cruise shuttles, usually paid per person rather than free, and the island's park-and-cruise scene is unusually strong: the port's official lots, independent cruise parking operators with shuttle service, and hotel packages that bundle a night plus parking for your sailing all compete on price, so it pays to compare. If you'd rather not drive at all, a rideshare from a Strand or Seawall hotel to the terminal is short and typically inexpensive — often $10 to $15 — though cars can be scarcer here than in a big city, so allow a few extra minutes for pickup on busy embarkation mornings.

The number that shapes every Galveston cruise is the drive: roughly an hour from central Houston in light traffic, and meaningfully longer from the northern suburbs or when I-45 congestion, construction, or a causeway backup intervenes. That's why the overnight stay is the standard advice even for Texans — a relaxed evening on the island beats a tense pre-dawn drive with a boarding cutoff looming. On sailing day, island traffic near Harborside Drive thickens by late morning, so leaving a Strand or Seawall hotel between 10:00 and 11:00 a.m. keeps things easy.
