Port Canaveral, FL — Kennedy Space Center's backyard — and a major Florida cruise hub.
Sailing from Port Canaveral
Port Canaveral is Florida's second-busiest cruise port and the home port for Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, and Carnival sailings to the Bahamas and Caribbean. Cocoa Beach is a five-minute drive from the terminal, and Kennedy Space Center is fifteen. If you've never seen a launch pad up close, the pre-cruise day here is some of the most unique pre-travel time you'll spend.
Where to Stay Before Your Port Canaveral Cruise
Cocoa Beach is the natural pre-cruise base — its hotel row along A1A sits roughly 10 to 15 minutes from the Port Canaveral terminals, and you get an actual beach town with surf shops, the pier, and casual seafood spots rather than a highway interchange. Cape Canaveral itself has a smaller cluster of hotels even closer to the port, some within five minutes of the terminal gates. Staying near Orlando International Airport is cheaper on paper, but it leaves you a 45-minute to one-hour drive on embarkation morning, which is exactly the kind of variable you booked a pre-cruise night to avoid.
This is one of the few major ports where free or low-cost hotel cruise shuttles are still genuinely common — many Cocoa Beach and Cape Canaveral properties run scheduled port shuttles, though some charge per person and most require you to reserve a time slot at check-in, so confirm the details when you book. A rideshare from Cocoa Beach to the terminal typically runs about $15 to $25. Drivers have good options too: the port's official lots charge a daily rate, and park-and-cruise hotel packages — one night plus parking for the length of your sailing — are a Cocoa Beach specialty and frequently beat the port lot on total cost.
Arrive the night before, especially if you're flying into Orlando — the airport is about an hour from the port and afternoon flight delays can turn a same-day arrival into a genuine emergency. The bonus of the early arrival is the area itself: an afternoon at Kennedy Space Center or an evening walk on Cocoa Beach is a better start to vacation than an airport gate. On sailing day, the drive from Cocoa Beach is short enough that a 10:30 a.m. hotel departure is comfortable; if your hotel shuttle's first run is earlier than you'd like, a rideshare gives you back the slow morning.
