Miami, FL — The cruise capital of the world.
Sailing from Miami
PortMiami handles more cruise passengers than any other port on the planet — over five million a year. Pre-cruise, South Beach and the Brickell waterfront put you in the middle of one of the country's great cities. The Art Deco district, Wynwood's murals, and some of the best Cuban food in the US are all within reach before you board. Post-cruise, a Miami night is the best possible soft landing after a week at sea.
Where to Stay Before Your Miami Cruise
For pure convenience, downtown Miami and Brickell are hard to beat — most hotels there sit about ten minutes from the PortMiami terminals via the Port Bridge, and you get a real neighborhood with restaurants and waterfront views rather than an airport strip. South Beach is the classic choice and runs roughly 20 to 30 minutes to the port depending on traffic on the MacArthur Causeway, so it works best if you want a proper beach day before sailing. Hotels near Miami International Airport are typically the cheapest option, but they put you 25 to 35 minutes from the terminal on embarkation morning.
Very few Miami hotels still run free cruise shuttles, so plan on paying for the transfer: a rideshare from Brickell or downtown to PortMiami usually lands in the $10 to $20 range, while South Beach or the airport area runs closer to $25 to $40. Some hotels sell scheduled port shuttle seats per person — worth comparing against a rideshare if you're traveling as a family, since a single car is often cheaper than three or four shuttle tickets. If you're driving, PortMiami's official garages charge a daily rate for the length of your cruise, and a handful of area hotels offer park-and-cruise packages where the room includes parking for the week — often the better deal if you need a night anyway.
Arrive the night before if you can. Miami traffic is unpredictable, and same-day flights into MIA leave no margin if anything slips. On departure morning, aim to reach the terminal in the late morning rather than right at opening — the worst congestion on Port Boulevard hits early, when everyone shows up at once. From Brickell or downtown, leaving your hotel around 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. typically gets you aboard with time to spare and lets you enjoy a relaxed breakfast first.
